Early intervention

Early intervention provides support and the right opportunities as early as possible, when your baby or toddler’s brain is growing quickly and has lots of potential for learning.

We work together with you on small, achievable steps supporting your baby or toddler to learn naturally and strengthen developing brain pathways at a time when neuroplasticity is high. We do this by choosing activities to support their next steps involving routine, play, interactions and practice.

By experiencing success and building confidence we create a strong foundation for later development for your whole family. You might not know exactly what support your baby or toddler needs, and that’s fine, we are here to find that out and give you the right advice and care.

What does Early Intervention look like at Pace?

Our therapists work with you to share ideas and strategies, adapting activities and building your confidence to recognise when your baby or toddler is finding them too much or not enough. This enables frequent, natural opportunities during your week without feeling forced.

Using toys, songs, games, and books through play increases your baby or toddler’s understanding of cause and effect, problem solving, movement and communication.

Daily routines like meal time and bath time help them explore movement and discover new sensory experiences using activities that naturally bring their attention to their hands.

Following your baby or toddler’s lead – what are they doing? What are they curious about? Using back and forth interactions, give them time to respond and celebrate their achievements.

Identifying whether some simple equipment or an adaptation to things your baby or toddler already uses can enable access to other activities and opportunities.

What therapies are provided?

The care your baby or toddler receives will be unique to them. Therapies we provide to babies and toddlers include:

Meet Maisie

Maisie was born by emergency C-section. The blood flow between Maisie and her mother’s placenta had reversed and she was born with very little blood in her body. She needed to be resuscitated and had a number of seizures.

Meet Isabelle

Isabelle has cerebral palsy and global developmental delay. She doesn’t get much support from her local NHS community team. But since she and her family came to Pace, Isabelle has been making great progress, through face-to-face sessions and teletherapy during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Meet Ben

Ben is 4 and has been coming to Child and Family sessions at Pace since April 2019. Ben lives at home with his Mum, Dad and older brother. He was born at term following an uneventful pregnancy. Ben was found to have a heart defect and required surgery when he was 4 months old.
