Messy play is a key part of learning and development. It fosters curiosity and creativity, providing a rich sensory experience that helps your child learn about the world. There is no right way to do messy play. It’s all about opportunities to explore materials… there’s no end goal and it needs to be fun!

Don’t force them; they may become even more resistant. Instead, let your child take the lead. Offer incidental opportunities that might spark your child’s curiosity, and motivate them to explore.

If your child is reluctant to touch anything sticky or wet, put substances in zip lock bags. Your child can explore the material without getting anything on their hands. You could try the following in the bags:
• Water beads
• Shaving foam
• Vegetable oil with food colouring
• Cooked rice or spaghetti

Using an object to explore the mess is a good way to start comfortably. Toy cars, sticks, paint brushes, scoops and plastic cups can all be tools to start exploring materials.

Things that are sticky and less predictable when handled, such as cooked rice or gloop, can be problematic for some children. Start with things that are start with things that are dry and have a such as moon sand or firm play dough, that don’t get stuck to your hand.

Incorporate messy play into everyday activities and play. If your child likes to explore boxes, place bags of materials where your child will find them. Their natural curiosity will inspire them to take a look! Bath time is a great opportunity for messy play, particularly with foam that can be washed off.
