The Comenius AAC Project comes to its conclusion

The final meeting of the EU funded Comenius AAC project was held 6-8th May at Percy Hedley School in Newcastle, and at Newcastle University. The meeting was opened by Associate Director Sue Fisher with a galvanising presentation on Mindset. The team then worked hard to complete and agree the products specified in the original plan, draft the joint parts of the final report required by each National Agency and consider ways to continue the valuable collaboration into the future.

We were also treated to two very special appearances. Firstly, in a guest lecture at Newcastle University, Dr. Annalu Waller, professor of computing science at Dundee University, described her passion for AAC and her current research using innovative technology to foster youngsters’ social communication and interpersonal skills.

On the last morning, Lee Ridley, better known as the BBC comedy award winning ‘Lost Voice Guy’, gave an inspirational, and of course funny, talk about disability and his life as an AAC user.
His insight and honesty spoke to each of us as professionals and as human beings. Although the project draws to the end, you can rest assured that the highly worthwhile professional liaison will continue for the benefit of our students across the EU.
